Programmpaket zur Ordnung und Verwaltung von großen Daten- und Dokumentbeständen sowie zum Heraussuchen einzelner Dokumente. Dazu bietet die Software Werkzeuge zur Indexierung an, unterstützt viele Dateiformate, arbeitet mit mehreren Sprachen und stellt verschiedene Suchverfahren zur Verfügung (Dokumentsuchsystem). Moderne Retrieval Software weist außerdem Internetfunktionalitäten auf und vermag Java-Programme auszuführen. Nutzer von Retrieval Software sind Bibliotheken, Unternehmen und Organisationen. Zahlreiche Retrieval-Programme sind auf dem Markt erhältlich, z. B. SearchServer 4.0, das unter Windows, Unix und Linux läuft.
